Advocating for Dental Insurance Reform with ALDA’s More for Your Smile Campaign

Driving Patient-Focused Policy Change in Alabama

Krantz Strategies partnered with the Alabama Dental Association (ALDA) to lead More for Your Smile, a multi-faceted campaign to advance dental insurance reform across Alabama. Acting as campaign architects, strategic consultants, and an extension of ALDA’s team, Krantz Strategies mobilized dentists, patients, and lawmakers to demand change.

The result: a growing movement built on clarity, public education, and relentless advocacy—designed not only to pass legislation but to transform how dental benefits work for the people of Alabama.

Challenge:

Alabama patients face an outdated dental insurance system where up to 40% of premiums are diverted to administrative costs and profits, not care. With benefits that disappear annually and create financial pressure for rushed or delayed treatment, ALDA needed a strategic partner to build a campaign that could educate the public, unite dental professionals, and push for systemic reform under tight timelines and resource constraints.

Goals

  • Create a high-impact campaign to drive public support for dental insurance reform

  • Serve as a seamless extension of ALDA’s team to lead campaign execution

  • Build an advocacy framework that supports both near-term wins and long-term policy change

Objectives

  • Launch a statewide, multi-channel campaign to educate and activate Alabamians

  • Support legislative advocacy for bills SB203, HB400, SB204, and HB401

  • Strengthen community engagement by empowering dentists, dental students, and patients

  • Equip ALDA with tools and messaging to sustain the campaign through future sessions

Strategy

Krantz Strategies brought national expertise and boots-on-the-ground execution to the campaign. The strategy combined in-depth issue analysis, patient-centered messaging, hands-on partnership with ALDA’s leadership and members, and scalable advocacy tools to maximize reach and influence.

Tactics

  • Multi-Channel Outreach: Launched a campaign website with integrated Spark Influence technology, resulting in more than 8,000 messages to legislators. Created a public-facing Facebook page with weekly posts and reels highlighting personal stories and reform needs.

  • Legislative Support: Drafted testimony, talking points, and materials for Senate hearings. Developed all media content for a virtual press conference and related outreach.

  • Community Engagement: Created comprehensive dentist toolkits with customizable flyers, social media posts, FAQs, and conversation guides. Distributed more than 1,000 campaign materials (pins, postcards, signs). Hosted 10+ training sessions to prepare dental professionals for advocacy.

  • Informational Tools: Produced a promotional video, eight billboards across high-traffic areas, and a password-protected dentist portal for streamlined campaign materials.

  • Media Coordination: Secured media coverage in AL.com, Alabama Political Reporter, and WSFA 12 News to increase public awareness and build momentum.

  • Internal Planning: Conducted statewide surveys, presented at town halls, and supported coordination with ALDA’s Insurance Reform Task Force.

Key Results

  • 8,000+ Constituent Messages: Spark Influence tool powered grassroots action, delivering thousands of personalized contacts to lawmakers

  • Dentist Engagement: 159 dental professionals participated directly, using toolkits and training to advocate with patients and legislators

  • Media & Visibility: Earned media coverage, a promotional video, digital campaigns, and eight billboards amplified the campaign’s reach

  • Public Awareness: Weekly social content reached thousands across Alabama, helping reframe dental benefits as a public issue, not just a private one

Through its partnership with ALDA, Krantz Strategies demonstrated its ability to lead high-impact advocacy efforts beyond state lines. The More for Your Smile campaign created a model for how dental associations, and other mission-driven organizations, can mobilize members, educate the public, and shift legislative momentum through clear strategy, strong messaging, and sustained engagement.
